With the 2016 Presidential Election heating up, SBA List wanted to better understand where their audience stood with the Republican candidates. They put together a Straw Poll and invited their audience to cast their vote for who they wanted as the Republican nominee. Traffic was pushed to the Straw Poll by an email. After someone took the Straw Poll, there was a confirmation page with a donation ask.
The Straw Poll featured the candidates pictures with radio buttons next to them. They tested this against a treatment with no radio buttons and just the candidates pictures. They A/B split the audience to determine which would perform better.

Key Learnings
While research has shown that radio buttons can create friction, they actually improved name acquisition for the Straw Poll. This suggests that the radio buttons presented a clear way for someone to vote. The Straw Poll had a very high conversion rate, but the absence of the radio buttons on the treatment may have created friction by confusing someone with how they were supposed to make their selection and vote.
